RBCS - Registered Billing & Coding Specialist

A Registered Billing & Coding Specialist (RBCS) is responsible for accurately translating patient information and into alpha-numeric medical code.

NCMA Scope of Practice:

  • Information handled by medical coders includes patient treatment, health history, diagnosis, and related information. This information will then be transferred between health care providers and insurance companies, so the proper amount of payment can be generated and paid. 
  • Medical coding and billing professionals must know several different coding systems, depending on their place of employment.
  • Need to have a thorough education in the use and application of medical billing software in coding systems and coding terminology.
  • Need to register with Center for Medicare Learning Network and be required to complete the following Continue Education courses:

           1. 837P and Form CMS-1500 (90 minutes) NCMA 1.5 CEU, Index# CMS06140729A

           2. 2015 Medicare Part C and Part D Data Validation Reporting Requirements (115minutes) PMI 2 CEUs

           3. Avoiding Medicare Fraud & Abuse: A Roadmap for Physicians (30 minutes)NCMA 1 CEU, Index# CMS06140728A

           4. Diagnosis Coding: Using the ICD-10-CM (60 minutes) NCMA 1 CEU,Index #CMS06140728A

           5. Drug Diversion: Schemes, Auditing, and Referrals (45 minutes) NCMA 1 CEU,Index#CMS06140728A

           6. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) EDI Standards (60minutes) NCMA 1 CEU, Index #CMS06140728A
